Direct debits over Europe's borders move step closer

Setting up a direct debit to pay the electricity bill for your property in France from your Italian bank account is set to become as easy as paying your domestic bills next year, but the service is unlikely to be free.

The prospect of bank customers being able to make direct debit payments across European borders edged closer yesterday when European Union regulators said that limited fees could be permitted to help launch the service.
