Readers abandon women's magazines

Magazine publishers have suffered sharp declines in the sales of celebrity-focused women's weeklies over the past year, raising questions about a sector that had been one of the fastest-growing in the struggling print business.

Closer and Heat, two of the Emap titles bought by H Bauer for £714m earlier this month, suffered circulation falls of 11.2 per cent and 12 per cent respectively, highlighting the challenge facing their new owner.
