Israeli PM paves way for big political realignment

Having exhausted the Big Bang, earthquakes and tsunamis, Israel’s political classes were yesterday rapidly running out of hyperboles to describe the extraordinary events of the past 10 days.

The decision of Ariel Sharon, prime minister, to quit the ruling Likud after three decades and form a rival party was just the latest, if most dramatic, of a series of events that together signalled a big realignment in Israeli politics.
