Security fears heightened significantly in Pakistan at the weekend after a suicide bomber killed at least 28 people and injured 50, including Pakistan’s interior minister, Aftab Sherpao.
The attack in Charsadda, a town in the volatile North-West Frontier province that borders Afghanistan, took place just minutes after Mr Sherpao had finished speaking at a public rally. The suicide bomber was blocked by policemen on duty when he tried to walk up to the minister, apparently to blow himself up. He then detonated the explosives tied to his waist.
