Centrica generates interest on talk of bid by European utility group

Centrica proved to be the main talking point in a London market that recovered most of its early losses in the last half-hour of trading.

In spite of Gazprom, the Russian gas producer, quashing bid rumours, shares in Centrica, which owns British Gas, still gained 1.9 per cent to 308¼p – the second biggest rise in the FTSE 100.
