America got its first glimpse of David Beckham on Friday when the star arrived in Los Angeles ahead of his mission to popularise football in a country that has, to date, been resistant to its charms.

Flanked by Antonio Villaraigosa, the city’s mayor, Beckham was introduced to 5,000 screaming fans at the Home Depot Center, base of the Los Angeles Galaxy, his club for the next five years.
