Consolidation in the small oil and gas sector has taken two steps closer, as Centrica took a 22 per cent stake in Venture Production and Bowleven revealed it was in talks about a possible cash bid.

Venture, which produces gas and oil in the North Sea, said it had no approach from Centrica before it took the stake, at a cost of about £239m.
