Robert Gates once described Senate confirmation hearings as “unpredictable, frustrating, exhausting, insulting, humiliating” and much like having a “root canal”.

On Tuesday, George W. Bush’s nomination to replace Donald Rumsfeld, whom the US president sacked the day after Republicans lost congressional elections last month, will undergo his third confirmation hearing – this time as defence secretary.
