PM faces prospect of rising jobless claims

Gordon Brown may fight the next election against the backdrop of unemployment benefit claims approaching levels last seen when John Major was in power, according to economic forecasts.

Jobless claims could jump by up to two-thirds to 1.3m by mid-2010 through a slowing economy and government welfare policies, a welfare think-tank has said.
