California court lifts gay marriage ban

California’s Supreme Court thrust the issue of gay marriage back into the national spotlight on Thursday after it struck down a pair of state laws that defined marriage as existing only between a man and a woman.

The ruling, which effectively legalises same-sex marriage in the state, is likely to re-kindle national debate over the practice, which emerged as a key wedge issue in the 2004 US presidential election.
