Anglo Platinum to focus on safety record

Anglo Platinum, the world’s largest producer of platinum, on Tuesday announced its new chief executive – a South African mining veteran whose principal brief is to improve the company’s safety record.

The appointment of Neville Nicolau, the former chief operating officer of AngloGold Ashanti, the South African gold company, comes nine months after the sudden resignation of his predecessor, Ralph Havenstein, who stepped down amid mounting criticism of the company’s accident rate.
