Attack on ECB isolates Sarkozy

France found itself isolated among its European Union partners at the weekend after Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, attacked the European Central Bank's handling of the credit crisis in world financial markets.

Central bankers and finance ministers, attending an EU meeting in Portugal, closed ranks behind the principle of ECB independence and made a point of praising the efforts of Jean-Claude Trichet, the ECB president, who is also French.
