What an extraordinary year gardeners have had. It is easy to say that it began very well, became briefly rather lovely, then turned into exactly the opposite before straightening itself up and ending on a kinder note.

That description hides a multitude of small complications. If you were working at ground level, you have my sympathies. On many weekends, it was a real struggle.
