In a crowded market, some models stand out from the rest

Ford reported record quarterly profits on Thursday, driven by success in its home US market and a reduction of losses in Europe. A long hangover from the financial crisis has seen high unemployment and a gloomy economic climate slash demand for cars in Europe, forcing manufacturers to close factories and look for other ways to reduce production capacity. Some carmakers have been more successful than others in adapting to the new climate, whether by launching innovative lines or looking abroad for growth to offset weakness at home.
