Acer is set to become the first top-tier computer company to launch a low-cost laptop, confirming the emergence of a new sub-notebook market segment.

Wang Jen-tang, chairman, said there were markets for low-cost computers and ultra-mobile PCs, and that Acer would launch products for these markets during the second and third quarter of this year.
