Nicolas Sarkozy has triggered a bitter row with French public television after setting out plans to tighten political control of the state-owned broadcaster.

Patrick de Carolis, head of France Télévisions, threatened on Wednesday to resign over the proposals to scrap advertising and attacked the president’s claim that there was no difference between the programming on public and private channels as “untrue, stupid and profoundly unfair”.
