US farm lobby defends biofuel

The American farm lobby is to mount a fierce defence of biofuel production, saying it plays only a minor role in soaring food prices, as Congress and the White House continue to wrangle about US agricultural subsidies

Bob Stallman, president of the American Farm Bureau Federation, said higher oil prices were the main reason for the rapid increase in the cost of food, and that farmers were at the mercy of market forces.
