Oil-producing countries and companies burned off gas worth $40bn at US prices last year, equivalent to 5.5 per cent of the world's total production of natural gas, according to the first study of flaring using satellite imaging.
Gas is flared during oil extraction, when the producers can find no use for it. It represents a waste of energy, causes hardship for local communities in oil-producing areas, and contributes to greenhouse gas emissions.
