Several key members are still at large

After the killing of Osama bin Laden earlier this year, al-Qaeda selected his longstanding deputy Ayman al-Zawahri as its new leader, according to an announcement on an Islamist website.

This graphic profiles Mr Zawahri, as well as other leading figures.

You can use the filters to see who is still alive, as well as who is at large or in detention.
