Shares in UAL, the parent of United Airlines, fell 37 per cent on Tuesday after it posted a steep quarterly loss caused by surging fuel costs.
It had been anticipated that most US airlines would struggle to remain profitable amid escalating fuel prices and a slumping economy. However, the extent of United’s shortfall stunned investors and raised concerns that it would not have enough cash on hand to meet the terms of its loan covenants.
