Economic alarm bells for NZ government

New Zealand’s slowing economy is setting off alarm bells within the ruling Labour party, which is trailing in the polls and facing a November deadline to hold elections.

Helen Clark, prime minister, called a crisis meeting of the party caucus last week after three local polls placed the nine-year-old government more than 20 points behind the rival National party.
