When riots engulfed three sections of Kabul’s Policharki prison on March 18, authorities responded with a military-style operation.

Armed police used tear gas to break into sections of the prison controlled by inmates. The prisoners’ water and electricity supplies were cut and electronic jammers were turned on to block their mobile phones.
