First Direct lifts bar on new mortgages

First Direct, which stopped offering some mortgages last month because it was swamped by huge volumes of new applications, has resumed lending to new ­customers.

The bank, which is part of HSBC, stopped lending in early April after it started receiving five times its ­normal level of applications, putting pressure on its ­service levels and processing times.
