Executives at recruitment companies, like estate agents, are the last people to talk down their own market. But even recruiters have been surprised at the resilience displayed by the jobs market – at least so far.

A round-table discussion involving four of the biggest recruitment companies, conducted with the Financial Times ahead of Wednesday’s official employment figures, reported that business generally had remained brisk, away from the troubled financial services sector.
