Northwest flies into $377m loss

Northwest Airlines swung to a quarterly loss after the US carrier, which will merge with rival Delta Air Lines this year, wrote down the value of goodwill impaired by the industry's gloomy outlook.

The results mirrored those of the other five legacy US airlines, which each posted losses amid mounting fuel costs.
