Wimbledon is rarely in need of hype, and this year it would be particularly superfluous. The championships that begin on Monday have attracted a mounting sense of anticipation in the two weeks since the French Open ended.
The reason is twofold: there could well be a new men’s champion for the first time in five years, and with the women’s game on the threshold of a new era, their singles title is one of the most open for years.
