US factory orders slide 4% in August

WASHINGTON, Oct 2 - New orders at US factories tumbled by an unexpectedly steep 4 per cent in August, the sharpest contraction since October 2006, a government report showed on Thursday, in a sign the credit freeze is biting into manufacturing.

Analysts polled by Reuters were expecting factory orders to slip 2.5 per cent.
