Syria is to introduce strict regulations on the entry of Iraqi refugees, blaming a lack of support from the Iraqi government for a tightening of what has been one of the few open exits for those fleeing the violence in Iraq.

The new measures, due to take effect next week, will allow visas only for Iraqis travelling for business, educational or scientific purposes, closing the door to the estimated 30,000 refugees who enter the country each month.
