Sifting through the SIV debris

Crushing liquidity and lack of investor appetite has crippled the market for structured investment vehicles.

SIVs, which at one time accounted for about $400bn of the credit market, added a further layer of uncertainty as the credit crunch made it impossible to value huge volumes of asset-backed securities.
