The hundreds of thousands of savers and borrowers with the Derbyshire and Cheshire building societies are missing out on the cash windfalls of up to a few hundred pounds that have traditionally accompanied society mergers.

Nationwide said that there would no cash distributions “to preserve capital within the enlarged Nationwide for the benefit of its combined membership”.
