Gas Natural, the Barcelona-based gas and electricity company, on Wednesday was set to announce the first step in what could eventually be a €17bn takeover bid for Unión Fenosa, Spain’s third-biggest power group.

If it goes ahead, the deal would create an integrated energy company worth more than €30bn, before divestments.
