House prices fell for a third consecutive month in November, according to a survey from the UK’s biggest mortgage lender that will heighten fears that this autumn’s slowdown could lead to sustained falls in property prices.

House prices fell 1.1 per cent last month, the Halifax said on Wednesday, taking the annual rate of house price inflation down to 6.3 per cent from 8.9 per cent in October. The reading is much weaker than analysts’ forecast of flat prices, and follows falls of 0.6 per cent and 0.7 per cent in the previous two months.
