Gusmao declared premier of East Timor

Xanana Gusmao, East Timor’s former president, was named prime minister on Monday after President José Ramos-Horta, his ally, intervened to end weeks of deadlock.

The move follows16 months of violence and administrative paralysis that has necessitated the deployment of 2,000 international troops and police.
