Signet signals slowdown

A profits warning from Signet, the world's biggest jeweller, has led Citigroup to predict the "UK consumer slowdown has finally arrived".

Signet, which operates the H Samuel and Ernest Jones chains, yesterday warned that sales in the US and UK had fallen in the past few weeks. The statement sparked fears that a poor Christmas, coupled with the higher cost of gold and diamonds, would damage full-year profts.
