Munevver Ozler is serious, studious, and, at 17, preparing for what may be the most important 195 minutes of her life. Along with around 1.6m other teenagers, she will this Sunday sit the university entrance exam, probably the most important rite of passage in a Turkish schoolchild’s life.
In addition to her high school classes, Munevver has been attending a cramming school – a dershane – since last September, taking an extra three hours of study a day to increase her chances of passing the exam. Parents all over Turkey spend hundreds of millions of dollars every year on this type of extra schooling specifically to help their children pass the exam.
