Arts chiefs yesterday bowed to pressure by sparing 15 organisations earmarked for grant cuts, following a public campaign that saw critics brand this year's funding allocation a "strategic catastrophe".

The reprieved institutions include London's Bush Theatre, Exeter's Northcott Theatre, the Bristol Old Vic, Arcadia Books and the National Student Drama -Festival.
