White House contenders present cold front

US President George W. Bush this week preached the virtues of constructive engagement with Russia but the leading candidates to succeed him appear to be competing for the most hawkish stance towards Moscow.

All three main presidential hopefuls – Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John McCain – have adopted increasingly tough language about Russia, raising the prospect of further deterioration in bilateral relations after Mr Bush leaves office next year.
