Congress turns heat up on energy traders

Two pieces of legislation will emerge from the US Congress this week that promise sweeping change to the way in which some of the most widely traded – yet little understood – financial products are regulated.

Senators Carl Levin and Dianne Feinstein are expected to present bills that would for the first time bring over-the-counter energy trading venues under the full jurisdiction of the US futures regulator, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
