Call for debate on topping up NHS drugs

A widespread public debate about whether patients should be allowed to “top up” NHS treatment was called for on Sunday by leaders of the British Medical Association. They warned the issue was more complex than simply allowing cancer patients to pay for drugs the NHS declines to fund.

Vivienne Nathanson, the BMA’s head of ethics, said the issue was “incredibly complicated” and raised difficult questions for society as well as doctors.
