Ratings cause Gordian Knot to unravel

Its management fought hard, but it looks as though Gordian Knot’s $40bn structured investment fund, Sigma Finance, faces a slow death.

Ratings downgrades from both Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s this week heaped more pressure on the vehicle, which must refinance $20bn worth of maturing debt by September. Even if markets reopen, the lower ratings will make funding far more difficult and costly.
