Colombia rebels at turning point

“Solidly united” and “profoundly optimistic about the way ahead in spite of all adversity”: that was the way Latin America’s oldest guerrilla group – the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc) – reacted this week to the death of its founder and leader, Manuel Marulanda.

But behind the rhetoric Colombia’s biggest leftwing guerrilla movement is increasingly isolated, unpopular and on the defensive.
