Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma’s democracy leader, on Thursday said she was ready and willing to engage with Burma’s military rulers in a meaningful dialogue on the country’s future.

“In the interest of the nation, I stand ready to co-operate with the government in order to make this process of dialogue a success,” Ms Suu Kyi said in a statement read out by Ibrahim Gambari, a UN special envoy, who met her for an hour just before his departure on Thursday. He flew to Singapore to give the statement, and is due to return to the UN headquarters in New York on Monday.
