US and Czech Republic in radar base deal

The US and the Czech Republic signed an agreement yesterday to build a radar base in the former Soviet bloc country as part of a planned extension of the US missile defence shield to central Europe.

Washington says the shield would defend it and its European allies against missile attacks from a foe such as Iran, and points to intelligence suggesting that Tehran could develop a long-range missile capable of striking its soil by 2015.
