Hospitals to be paid based on performance

Hospitals will for the first time be paid for the quality of their care under proposals to be announced on Wednesday in Labour’s draft legislative programme for the year.

Gordon Brown, the prime minister, is to propose adjusting the so-called “tariff” – the price hospitals are paid for each procedure – to reflect patient satisfaction or health outcomes.
