Council to subject claimants to lie test

Birmingham council, the UK’s largest local authority, is to install a telephone lie-detection system in an effort to identify benefits cheats.

The council hopes the move will help it to reduce fraudulently obtained overpayments of more than £1m a year. The software will scan claimants’ speech patterns, looking for irregularities consistent with lying, such as changes in speed or tone.
