General Ashfaq Kiyani, Pakistan’s new military chief, has the trust of President Pervez Musharraf and US security agencies, analysts say, but could yet show an independent streak.

The country’s political crisis, with protests expected in the run-up to parliamentary elections planned for January, will force Gen Kiyani into decisions on extending or withdrawing support from the president.
