John Edwards, the former Democratic presidential candidate, has admitted that he had an affair with a former campaign staffer and that he had repeatedly lied when asked about it by reporters.

The admission, which is likely to put an end to Mr Edwards’ remaining political ambitions, including his widely disseminated hope of becoming attorney-general in an Obama administration, prompted outrage from former Edwards’ staffers.
