Teachers strike on Zimbabwe pay

Teachers across Zimbabwe started an indefinite strike on Wednesday demanding salary increases index-linked to the country’s spiralling rate of inflation and arguing their current wages were below the official poverty line.

The strike came against the backdrop of an intensifying economic crisis and amid open divisions in the government over the plan of the president, Robert Mugabe, to force foreign businesses to hand a controlling stake to black Zimbabweans.
