Oxford University plans to raise £1.25bn from donations in “the most sustained co-ordinated fund-raising effort ever undertaken by a European university”, it was announced on Wednesday.

By increasing the amount of money raised from endowments, gifts and donations, Oxford hopes to compete with the spending power of top US universities which have proved much more successful in attracting large sums from former students.
