'Virtual' operators use low-price plans as marketing tool

A new wave of "virtual" mobile phone operators is vying to push down the price of calls - and put a direct marketing device straight into customers' pockets.

Ikea and Asda this month became the latest to join the ranks of companies known as MVNOs - mobile virtual network operators - that purchase wholesale mobile services and sell them on to retail customers, offering calls at 9p and 8p per minute respectively.
